It all Begins |
|
June, about a month before Mandy's struggle against the drowning embrace
of the ocean, the redheaded teen waited nervously for her aunt. Her bedroom
was a bright and airy space on the second story of her mom and dad's oversized
cape.
Blue; her walls were blue, blue as the ocean that she loved. Taped up on some of the walls were posters of bands and singers that she admired. Mandy's tastes did not always match her friends, but that's OK. Until recently, friends were few and far; being ostracized by the 'in' group in school did not make for a wide collection of social acquaintances. All this changed dramatically at the end of the school year when her life became permanently entwined with her new friends, April and Sandy, over the most bizarre of mutual bonds; Magik. A quick glance at her bureau mirror revealed a flaming redheaded teen with a hint of freckles, just shy of her seventeenth birthday. She thought back to that turbulent introduction to Magik in the last months of her sophomore year. The spring grew late with fragrant blossoms and final exams drew nearer and nearer, as Mandy looked forward to the last dance of the school year which as she had landed herself a date. This pretty normal life changed quickly. Mandy had fought a life and death struggle with the Seeds of Evil (which Mandy didn't even know existed until the struggle). She had gained new friends Sandy and April, who revealed a whole new world of Magik to her, and was accepted into A Circle of Three when Mandy received this golden pendant that she now nervously fingered. This was another story, dutifully recorded in an earlier Book of Newport, when the Circle was just Two. Now, it was Saturday and Mandy sat, waiting for her visitor. She smoothed the hem of her skirt, swallowed hard with a dry throat, and continued to wait. The doorbell rang. The sound of the front door being opened traveled up the stairs. There was muted conversation.
